Assessment of risk trees has become a natural part in the management of trees. For tree managers, consultants and arborists, it is therefore important to know the factors that influence whether a tree should be classified as a risk-tree and the actions that can be taken to reduce the risk.

TRAQ (Tree Risk Assessment Qualification) is a system for tree risk assessment. The course is owned and controlled by the ISA. From November 2025 ISA have updated the TRAQ program with the TRAQ 3.0 program. This means that if you are already TRAQ-qualified and want to renew your qualification, you must complete this full course. It is no longer possible to take a TRAQ renewal/update course.

Prerequisites and Course Application

To be able to attend the TRAQ course, ISA requires that the participant has knowledge and written proof of the knowledge within at least four of the five areas listed below. If you haven’t one of the pre-approved eligibility requirements, you need to proof your knowledge by an eligibility application This eligibility equivalency application is made through ISA’s credentialing system and reviewed by ISA. To get approved, upload certificates, university course certificates and syllabus or other relevant documents to in the system.

Required knowledge:

• A basic knowledge and comprehension of tree biology, especially as it relates to basic tree anatomy, wood structure and function, and wood decay
• The knowledge to identify the major tree species in the local area
• A fundamental knowledge of arboricultural practices, including pruning and tree support systems
• The knowledge to assess tree health and diagnose biotic and abiotic disorders common to trees in the local area
• A basic understanding of soil science and local soil conditions
  
  Fee for eligibility application
  If you need to submit an application to become eligible, application submission fees will apply. Candidates who are members of ISA receive a standard 20% discount. The application fee is $40 USD for ISA members and $50 USD for all others. Please note, this fee is in addition to the course fee and paid to ISA.

Course content

To be able to pass the test it is important to read the literature and study the glossary. Being familiar with the words in beforehand increases the chances of passing the course. The course, the literature and the written test is all in English.

It is a three day course, where the first two days is focusing on teaching how TRAQ works. The third day you will be finishing the course with a test. After you pass the test you become TRAQ-qualified.

• Day 3: 08.00 AM – 12.00 PM

Course fee

• 7400 SEK for members of ISA and the Swedish Chapter
• 7900 SEK for members of the Swedish Chapter
• 9200 SEK for nonmembers
• 4900 SEK for re-exam

All prices excluding VAT. The fee includes tea/coffee and lunch on days one and two and tea/coffee on day three. The fee also includes ISA’s TRAQ book digital and exercise book.

Course leader

Johan Östberg is a docent in landscape architecture with a specialization in landscape planning. He is also an ISA Certified Arborist Municipal Specialist, ISA Board Certified Master Arborist, TRAQ Qualified, VETCert-certified and co-owner of Trädkontoret AB.

Bedömning av riskträd har blivit en naturlig del i arbetet med träd. För trädförvaltare, konsulter och arborister är det därför viktigt att känna till vilka faktorer som påverkar om ett träd ska klassas som ett riskträd och vilka åtgärder som kan vidtas för att minska risken.

TRAQ (Tree Risk Assessment Qualification) är ett system för trädriskbedömning. Kursen ägs och styrs av ISA. Från och med november 2025 har ISA uppdaterat TRAQ-programmet till TRAQ 3.0. Det betyder att du som redan är TRAQ-kvalificerad sedan tidigare och vill förnya din kvalifikation behöver gå denna kurs i sin helhet. Det går alltså inte längre att gå en TRAQ-uppdateringskurs.

Förkunskaper och kursansökan

För att kunna delta i TRAQ-kursen kräver ISA att deltagaren har skriftligt bevis på kunskap inom minst fyra av de fem områden som listas nedan. Om du inte uppfyller något av de i förhand ­godkända behörighetskraven från ISA behöver du styrka din kunskap genom en behörighetsansökan. Denna ansökan om behörighet görs via ISAs credentialing-system och granskas sedan av ISA. För att bli godkänd laddar du upp intyg, kursintyg, kursplaner och/eller andra relevanta dokument i systemet.

Krav på förkunskaper:
• Grundläggande kunskap och förståelse i trädens biologi, särskilt trädanatomi, vedens struktur och funktion samt vednedbrytning
• Kunskap för att identifiera de vanligaste träden i det lokala området
• Grundläggande kunskaper i arboristiska metoder, inklusive beskärning och stödsystem
• Kunskap för att bedöma trädens vitalitet och diagnostisera biotiska och abiotiska skador vanliga i det lokala området
• Grundläggande förståelse för marklära och lokala markförhållanden

Om du behöver lämna in en ansökan för att bli behörig tillkommer en ansökningsavgift. Medlemmar i ISA får 20 % rabatt. Avgiften är 40 USD för ISA-medlemmar och 50 USD för övriga.
Observera att denna avgift är utöver kursavgiften och betalas direkt till ISA.

Kursinnehåll

För att klara provet är det viktigt att läsa litteraturen och studera ordlistan. Att vara bekant med begreppen i förväg ökar chanserna att klara kursen. Kursen, litteraturen och det skriftliga provet är helt på engelska.

Det är en tredagarskurs, där de två första dagarna fokuserar på undervisning i hur TRAQ fungerar. Den tredje dagen avslutas med prov. Efter godkänt prov blir du TRAQ-kvalificerad.

• 7 400 SEK för medlemmar i ISA och Swedish Chapter

Alla priser exkl. moms. Avgiften inkluderar te/kaffe och lunch dag ett och två samt te/kaffe dag tre. Kursavgiften inkluderar även ISA:s TRAQ-bok digitalt och övningsbok.

Kursledare
