Protecting and conserving urban treed landscapes in the context of spatial development

The course focuses on how to effectively protect and conserve urban trees and landscapes throughout the entire spatial development process. It is aimed at professionals involved in planning, design and construction near urban trees, equipping them with the tools and strategies needed for sustainable development and tree conservation. The course is structured around key project phases:

Design Phase: Planning
• Tree structure and architecture, above and below ground, as well as the landscape / soil that supports / sustains the tree – how this defines what must be protected and conserved during spatial development;
• What are the varied spatial development projects that can impact urban treed landscapes and thus require protection measures;

Elements required for all spatial development projects:
• Tree / landscape assessment
• Evaluate existing protection Standards and requirements – Federal and local – and their applicability to the proposed project;
• Review preliminary project proposal, including Contract Plan Drawings;
• Review proposed general and detailed specifications to be appended to contract;

Design Phase: Design
• Assess potential project design impacts and their mitigation, based on tree inventory findings and trees/landscapes designated for protection and conservation;
• Where existing design will negatively impact a protected tree, review alternative design possibilities with Engineer / Architect;
• Finalize tree/landscape assessment with additional design and disposition information;
• Protected landscape access specifications/protocols required to accommodate access;
• Specification of remedial actions to reduce potential construction damage including contractor/sub-contractor experience criteria and materials requirements;

Build Phase: Pre-Construction
• Review and confirm that all Specification / Plan Drawing elements are included in the final approved documents;
• Project Tree Expert oversight of soil and tree removal/transplanting activities, per survey designation;
• Project Tree Expert installation oversight of required protection elements where and as necessary;

Build Phase: Construction
• Project Tree Expert site monitoring and oversight for all construction activities in proximity to treed landscapes, designated as protected including unforeseen problems/conflicts that can arise during construction activities;
• implementation by Project Tree Expert of additional tree/landscape protection measures on an as needed basis;

Build Phase: Post-Construction
• Upon completion of all construction activities, a site evaluation shall be conducted by the Project Tree Expert and the official permitting entity to assess the sire and create a punch list of any and all tree/landscape impacts, such as compaction or damage, that must be mitigated before the project is accepted;
• Project Tree Expert must ensure that all established TLPZ barriers and fences remain in place during impact mitigation;
• Project Tree Expert oversight of any and all tree/landscape impact mitigation activities.

Naomi Zürcher
She brings over 40 years of experience as a practicing Urban Forester, a Consulting Arborist and a Chartered Environmentalist, specializing in the development and implementation of Urban & Community Forest Management Plans as well as the formulation of a Building WITH Trees© ecological approach to spatial development, implemented through the authoring of Tree / Landscape Protection/Conservation specifications as a Design team member as well as oversight and enforcement on the Build team of large Public Infrastructure projects, primarily in New York and now in Switzerland. Her career bridges planning, hands-on work, and research, reflecting a deep and holistic understanding of urban forestry. She has played a key role in developing strategies for urban tree management and contributed to the evolution of i-Tree.
